Roofers have a bad reputation for doing poor work. One reason for this is that the home owner never gets on the roof to see what was actually done. Many time I have repaired roofs that were reported to have been fixed by another roofer, only to find no work had actually been performed! This happens more than you may think.
Read reviews on roofing companies before you spend money on workmanship that does not meet your standards. Need a handyman to fix those common household repairs? Find local unbiased reviews on the best handymen. Try Angie’s List.
Why Angie’s List is better than other consumer review, rating and complaint sites:
- No anonymous consumer reviews.
- Certified data collection process prevents companies from reporting on themselves or rating each other.
- Help from our Customer Complaint Resolution Team if a project goes bad.
- Live call center support.

Roofing projects? Stay safe and hire a roofer!
Roofing projects are high risk. It goes without saying that messing around with your roof can be a dangerous situation, and we’re not just talking about the height. So, before you get any bold delusions of breaking out your ladder and shimmying up to your rooftop, you should strongly consider calling in a professional.
It might seem like a simple water leak, but that leak could reveal a whole host of problems you never even thought about. Missing shingles, water damage and wood rot are projects best left to someone more qualified than you. The last thing you need is your foot going through your roof into your attic . . . or worse.
But where do you start? How do you find the right person for the job? Here are a few helpful tips to get your started on your search:
Identify the problem
There are a number of different specialties within roofing, so knowing what you’re looking to have fixed will help you narrow down your search. Some roofers only work on new roofs. Some work on old roofs, gutters, decks, and more. If you know what you need, it will help you choose someone who’s best suited to fix your problem.
Do your research
There are a number of other online sources available to help aid you in your search. You’ll be able to read reviews of companies, find out about their experience and possibly even get a free quote. It doesn’t take a lot of time, but it could end up saving you a lot of money to do a little research upfront.
You might also call around to some of your friends or family members to see if they can recommend anyone that they’ve used in the past. The best way to get a quality recommendation is to get it from someone you know.
Qualifications
Make sure anyone you choose is properly licensed and insured. There are lots of people that do general contract work, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re qualified to do the proper repairs to your roof. They will also have to carry the proper insurance to make sure that you’re not liable for any damage to your property or to them in case of an accident.
Guarantees
What happens when the first big storm rolls through and you’ve got water rushing into your house or if the shingles are blown off again? Will they make the repairs? You want to make sure that they offer you a proper guarantee on their work. Making sure you have a proper guarantee is just another way you can rest easy the next time it starts to rain.
When installed properly, most products are covered under a manufacture’s warranty, so you shouldn’t come across any problems there, but it’s always good to know.
Ask Questions
When they come to assess your project, make sure you ask as many questions as possible. Get more
information about the company, their qualifications, guarantees and insurance. It’s always good for you to come away feeling good about the people who are going to be working on your home. Just like any project, you want to make sure you’re as well informed as you possibly can be in order to get the best deal, work with the best people and to avoid getting taken to the cleaners by someone not qualified for the job.

Description Of Work:
Repaired roof leak involving skylight, repaired flashing near chimney and skylight and re-shingled a small section of the roof.
Member Comments:
Chuck Jines went above and beyond on this one. The leak proved to be extremely difficult to find. First he repaired two small leaks near the skylight and rebuilt the flashing. (I confirmed these leaks by observing water marks on the boards under the shingles — they were real.) Unfortunately, this didn’t stop our problem. He then came back out, immediately tarped the roof and kept searching. In the meantime, he improved the flashing even further and eventually tracked the main leak to the skylight itself, which he fixed. This was a hard job, and even though it wasn’t completed perfectly the first time, he did a fabulous job fixing the most likely culprit each time and we eventually got it. Everything has been perfect for a year at this point. Chuck’s communication was clear and accurate. He was very honest with us and did all the work quickly and professionally. I would highly recommend him for difficult roofing issues.

Hire Again:YesChuck was very courteous on the phone, and explained how he works. He told me that he has a flat rate for leak repairs, for up to 3 patches. I agreed to the price, and he put me on the schedule, but there was quite the snowstorm, so the repair was delayed a few days. He arrived as agreed, and repaired the roof in about an hour and a half. He took lots of pictures, and showed me exactly what he did. There were no surprises or hidden costs. Overall, I was very satisfied and I strongly recommend him.Description Of Work:Placed 3 temporary patches on my flat roof to stop two leaks until the weather warms up and the house can be reroofed.
Hi Chuck, this is Purav Kapadia, in Chicago. You did a patch on Feb 2nd, and I wanted to let you know that it did take care of the problem perfectly. I really appreciate it, and whenever you think the weather is ready, please let me know so we can put the elastomeric coating in. Also, please feel free to give out my email if anyone is looking for a reference.
Thanks,
Purav
Here in Cape Girardeau, my roof is still doing quite well. A few weeks ago, we had strong winds. My roof held on but a few on the hill here had roofs came off.
Thank you again for your good work.
Glad to see you doing well.Betty Morgan
“We had several companies out who told us we needed a new roof or extensive repairs and they wouldn’t warranty any repairs. Jines told us the roof was good for at least a couple of years and gave a thorough explanation as to how and why the roof leaked and how to repair it. Then he fixed the roof, charged a reasonable price, and offered a two year warranty. Member Comments: He came out when he said he was going to. His price was pretty reasonable. The leak on the second floor stopped, so he fixed the problem.”
Thanks for the good word!
I had a leaking roof near my chimney. They came in and fixed it, putting in new flashing and shingles.
Member Comments:
I haven’t had any problems with the roof leaking since, and I was happy with their work. I was happy that they actually called me back and showed up on time, and that he was willing to repair the roof rather than suggesting replacing it. He seemed very trustworthy.
What words of advice would you give this contractor? Keep up the great work
