How To Prep a Flat Roof for Elastomeric Acrylic Coating

While I don’t recommend using silver seal, this video has some good tips on How-To Seal Coat A Flat roof and preparing a flat or metal roof for applying elastomeric cool coat. (I use Mule-Hide Elastomeric acrylic coating. I give full instructions here) Notice that they DO NOT use soap or other cleaning chemicals. You should use plain water when cleaning the roof. Also, a pressure washer is a must!

My note: I would not use Black Jack sealants or any other kind of tar. Use the correct cool coat.

This video covers a green roofing cool coating system that includes a polyester fabric mesh. In most cases, a homeowner can apply the Mule-Hide brush or roll on system that does not require a mesh. Mirror Seal is a UL 790 approved elastomeric, energy saving roof product that will save you money.

How It’s Made – Solar Panels

Last week I posted a short video that went over some of the basics of green roofing. One other way to go green is to start using solar power. With a mixture of skylight to allow natural light in during the daylight hours, and solar panels to collect the sun’s energy for use after dark, you can really start to save money.

This is a cool video that show the process of making a solar panel starting with just a few small modules of photovoltaic cells that are then connected together.

36 modules are connect together in nine rows to make one three foot by four foot solar panel. A metallic strip is used to connect all the rows together. Once the modules are attached to a clear laminate and plastic frame, it can the be tested to make sure it has the proper current. It takes about one hour to go through the whole process from simple modules to complete solar panel.

Why VELUX Skylights?

In my opinion VELUX makes the best skylights. Here in Chicago I have repaired many skylights and very few of them have been VELUX.
