Fall is a great time to have your roof inspected. New roof shingles are often not installed according to the manufacturer’s installation specifications or the industry standards.

From missing drip-edge to improperly installed stack flashing, there are many places on a roof that could leak due to improper shingle installation. Chimneys are also an area that you should have inspected. This video shows and explains several typical flaws.

Here’s a short video that shows how to install chimney flashing on a metal roof.

This video shows how to install a chimney flashing when installing a metal shingles roof, such as Tamko Metal Works steel shingles used in this video.

1) Cut the reglet in the chimney, using a grinder with diamond masonry blade.
2) Blow out any dirt and dust form the reglet and work area.
3) Install head wall flashing.
4) Install sidewall flashing on both sides.
5) Run the shingles all the way to the top and above the chimney, on both sides.
6) Install Back-Pan flashing Up the chimney and up the roof, so it butts tightly against the the lock of the first course of metals shingles above the chimney, and wrap ends around corners.

Once all flashing is installed, seal corners with Solar Seal 900 or other roof caulking.
